Garden Notes - September

Embracing New Beginnings: My Journey with Euphorbia Garden Advice and Training

Helena Glassup, September 2024.

Just as September marks a change of season in the garden, I am also stepping into an exciting new chapter in my horticulture journey with the next step in the development of my consultancy, Euphorbia Garden Advice and Training.

After running the business alongside my main job teaching horticulture at a local college for the last two years, I have realised that the time has come to dedicate myself to full-time consultancy work. Fuelled by my passion for plants and gardening, Euphorbia Garden Advice and Training is about more than just plants. It’s about empowering you to have the confidence to create and maintain a space that brings you joy every time you step into it.

I’m a firm believer in the benefits of green spaces on mental and physical health and well-being, and I’m on a mission to help you grow in confidence. Whether you are new to gardening or already have experience, I can teach you how to look after your garden or provide support if you already know how to care for your garden but want to take it to the next level.

In this first set of garden notes, I thought I’d describe what makes Euphorbia Garden Advice unique and shine a light on some of the ways I can help bring out the best in your garden.

So How Can I Help You?

Garden consultants are by nature independent, so by booking a garden visit, you are getting the benefit of my extensive experience and knowledge. I have no expectation of carrying out work in your garden, so I don’t benefit from advising you to undertake expensive redevelopments. Neither do I provide ongoing maintenance services, so you know any advice I give will be independent and trustworthy. If you want help finding a regular gardener, I can support you in finding the right services for your garden too.

Garden Guidance

If you have found a new interest in gardening, I can help you build the skills you need to develop your outside space. Teaching you simple garden basics and giving you the confidence to nurture your plants, my Garden Zero to Garden Hero sessions might be for you. If you are an experienced gardener but find certain tasks harder to complete, I can offer companionship and a helping hand to keep you enjoying your garden for longer.

Planting Recommendations and Problem Solving

Do you have a border that needs revitalising or an area that looks tired and neglected? I’m happy to recommend plants to give a border a revamp, solve specific garden problems, and advise on small changes that will make a big impact without breaking the bank.

Personalised Consultations

The process is simple: book an appointment with me, and I will visit your garden to talk through what you need. I will follow my visit with a written report or maintenance schedule tailored to your garden’s needs. If you need more than just one visit, I’m also able to be an ongoing mentor to support you in your gardening journey.

Talks and Workshops

As a listed RHS Speaker and Yorkshire in Bloom Judge, I am available to deliver garden talks to clubs and societies or run practical, hands-on workshops in garden crafts or skills.

Ready to Transform Your Garden?

I’m excited to embark on this new journey and look forward to helping you bring out the best in your garden. Whether it’s through personalised advice, ongoing support, or inspiring workshops, I’m here to make your gardening experience both rewarding and enjoyable. Let’s work together to create a garden that you’ll love and cherish.

The Month Ahead

As summer gently fades into autumn, I’m excited to see the changes that the season will bring. I’m already planning more inspirational visits to Yorkshire gardens, as well as keeping up with the latest garden trends in my local garden centres. On the 14th of September, I’ll be at the Harrogate Autumn Flower Show at Newby Hall, where I’ll be joining colleagues from the Chartered Institute of Horticulture on the Garden Advice stand. This year, we’re near the Human Gardener Stage, so no doubt I’ll get the opportunity to listen to Sarah Owen-Hughes, Faith Douglas, and other guests throughout the day.

In my own garden, I’m hoping to get lots of jobs done. No doubt I’ll share the progress I’m making on Instagram and Facebook over the next few weeks. I’ve got a wall to build, compost heaps to turn, seeds to sow ready for the spring, and beds to revitalise. We’re in the middle of having building work done at the moment, so if the weather is too bad, I’ll likely be indoors planning ahead for 2025.
